This site contains

  • pages on many aspects of traditional and national Welsh women’s costume;
  • descriptions of Welsh costume written by and for tourists to Wales, 1700 – 1900;
  • descriptions of surviving Welsh costumes in public and some private collections including dolls.

The site is written in English but Welsh language sources (of which there are far fewer than in English) have been used and quoted, with translations.

This site is being created by Michael Freeman, curator of Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth, 1991-2012. It is not a blog: there are pages on various subjects which are constantly under review; new pages and additional information and revisions to existing pages are made as new information becomes available.
