1884 Liverpool Eisteddfod

National Eisteddfodau were occasionally held outside Wales, including Liverpool and London.

There is a costume worn at the Liverpool Eisteddfod in 1884 by Gwenllian Lhuyd (or possibly Mary Ann Lloyd, who married David Roberts) in the Welsh National History Museum, St Fagans, and there is a photograph of her wearing it (catalogue number 30.631).

Although the basic structure of the gown is similar to others from south-west Wales, the fabric is not striped and is green – a colour hardly ever used in traditional Welsh costume. It was probably made especially for the Eisteddfod, and was worn for subsequent photographs.
