My mother (sitting), Shan y Lliwdy and Bontfaen maid

Photograph by John Thomas, 1867. My mother (sitting), Shan y Lliwdy and Bontfaen maid

John Thomas came from Crybin, Ceredigion, where this photograph was probably taken. His mother is probably wearing an old gown, with low-cut front, held across her chest with pins or a long thorn, into which she has tucked a small shawl or kerchief. The woman on the left is wearing a dress, but the woman on the right is wearing a short sleeved gown with separate sleeves.
