Roberts, Peter

Peter Roberts’ Cambrian Popular Antiquities, published in 1815 contains a number of prints of Welsh people but the costumes they are shown wearing is unlike most other illustrations: they are more like an imaginary costume of earlier years. His prints Easter Monday; Singing to the Harp and Dancing and The Funeral shows men wearing hats like those adopted by women as the Welsh hat and the women are wearing long white dresses or bedgowns wrapped around their waist and held in place with a belt or an apron. They are similar to the bedgowns shown in the prints of J W Harding, 1810-1812.
